5 HOUR COSTUMES

During my tenure as a Core Fellow at Penland School of Crafts, I uncovered an undeniable drive to reveal my curiosities in collaboration with others and the environment in no one specific material. Outside of the studios, I continued to explore my creativity as an entertainment coordinator for the school where I created costumes and props for bi-weekly bashes. I found that this type of intuitive expression in the form of exaggerated, temporary decoration and quick, gestural costume-making was just as important as the fine craftsmanship that I was studying in the classroom. Ultimately, I discovered that my passion for construction, installation, and costuming should merge.

This project was a series of costumes and events that lasted over a two year period. During every session I attended during the two years, I worked on a costume for a 5-hour period and wore it to a party I helped throw for the students attending each session. The costumes were made for themed parties. A few examples you can see here are Robert Rauschenberg’s Monogram from an (UN)Still Life party, Oscar de la Groucha from a Garbage to Glitz party, Charlie Brown Bag Lunch from a Before and After party, and a broken mirror from a Very Superstitious party.
